Yellow or flickering burner flame: A healthy gas burner produces a steady blue flame. Yellow or orange flames indicate incomplete combustion, which can produce elevated carbon monoxide levels. If you see a yellow flame, turn off the furnace and call for service immediately.

Unusual smells: A sulfur or rotten egg smell near gas appliances indicates a possible gas leak — evacuate and call your gas company. A burning dust smell at the start of heating season is normal and clears quickly. Persistent burning or metallic smells warrant service.

Strange noises: Banging at startup can indicate delayed ignition (gas building up before igniting). Squealing points to a failing blower motor bearing. Rattling can mean loose components. Signs It's Time to Replace Rather Than Repair

Age: Furnaces typically last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. If your system is approaching or past this range, major repairs are often poor investments relative to replacement.

The 50% rule: If a repair costs more than 50 percent of the system's replacement value — especially on a furnace over 10 years old — replacement is almost always the better financial decision. You're investing in old technology with limited remaining life.

Frequent repairs: If you've called for furnace repairs multiple times in the past few years, the system is likely declining. Track your repair costs — if they're adding up, the math often favors replacement.

Rising utility bills despite repairs: If your furnace is consuming increasing amounts of gas even after service, it's losing fundamental efficiency — a replacement will deliver better performance and lower operating costs.

80% AFUE or lower: If your current furnace operates at 80% or lower efficiency (common in systems installed before 2005), replacing it with a Trane 95%+ AFUE model saves enough on gas bills to meaningfully offset the replacement cost over time.
