WHAT'S REALLY IN YOUR WATER
AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT!

Better Water for Boise and Nampa
The water coming out of your taps is some of the hardest in the Pacific Northwest. Water Softening & Purification
UNDERSTANDING WATER HARDNESS
Water hardness is caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals that your water picks up as it moves through rock and soil before reaching your home. The Boise River and Treasure Valley aquifer systems pass through calcium-rich geology — so by the time water reaches your tap, it carries a significant mineral load.
Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG) or milligrams per liter (mg/L):
Water Hardness Scale
-
0–1 GPG: Soft water
-
1–3.5 GPG: Slightly hard
-
3.5–7 GPG: Moderately hard
-
7–10.5 GPG: Hard
-
10.5+ GPG: Very hard
-
Treasure Valley: typically 7–15+ GPG — 'hard to very hard'
What Hard Water Does to Your Home
-
Scale buildup clogs pipes over time, reducing flow
-
Water heaters lose up to 30% efficiency from scale deposits
-
Dishwashers and washing machines wear out significantly faster
-
White, chalky deposits form on faucets, shower doors, and fixtures
-
Soap and shampoo won't lather — you use 50%+ more product
-
Laundry fades, stiffens, and wears out 15% faster
The 8 Water Quality Challenges for City Water
1. HARD WATER
The Problem: Heavy mineral content wreaks havoc on appliances, plumbing, and fixtures. Standard water softeners exchange calcium for sodium — creating a slippery 'can't wash the soap off' feeling. Scale builds in pipes, water heaters lose efficiency, and every surface your water touches shows the evidence.
Ashley's Solution: WaterTech Reionator Pro (RX10) or Reionator Pro Ultra (RXU13) — Ashley's proprietary conditioning systems soften water while eliminating the slippery feeling, reducing chlorine, and addressing other contaminants simultaneously. Also: WaterTech SoftMAX Pro for dedicated softening.
2. PFAS - 'FOREVER CHEMICALS'
The Problem: PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, including PFOS and PFOA) are synthetic compounds once used in common household products, non-stick coatings, and industrial applications. They do not break down naturally — hence 'forever chemicals' — and have been detected in water supplies nationwide, including in Idaho. PFAS are associated with cancer, immune system effects, and developmental issues in children.
Ashley's Solution: WaterTech Infinity Protector — IAPMO R&T Certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 for PFAS (PFOS and PFOA) reduction. Ashley installs this whole-home filter to provide certified PFAS protection at every tap in your home.
3. LEAD
The Problem: Lead in drinking water is odorless, tasteless, and colorless — making it impossible to detect without testing. While Boise city water is treated, lead can leach into your water from older service lines and household plumbing after treatment. Even low levels can cause behavior and learning problems in children, lower IQ, and slowed development. For pregnant women, lead exposure can harm fetal development.
Ashley's Solution: WaterTech Infinity Protector (NSF/ANSI Standard 53 certified for lead) or Reionator Pro / Reionator Pro Ultra. Ashley confirms which solution is right for your home's plumbing age and water test results.
4. CHLORINE AND CHLORAMINES
The Problem: Chlorine and chloramines are added by municipal water utilities to disinfect your water during treatment and distribution — they do their job by the time water reaches your home, but continue to affect taste, odor, and the feel of your water and skin. Many Treasure Valley utilities have shifted to chloramines (a chlorine/ammonia compound), which are harder to remove than chlorine alone.
Ashley's Solution: WaterTech Reionator Pro or Reionator Pro Ultra — remove chlorine taste, odor, and feel without costly filter replacements. WaterTech SorbMAX Pro for whole-home carbon filtration targeting chloramines and organic chemicals. WaterTech Infinity Guardian or Protector for certified chloramine reduction throughout your home.
5. CLOUDY WATER (TURBIDITY)
The Problem: Cloudy, gray, or hazy water is caused by dissolved or suspended solids — often triggered by heavy storms, construction runoff, or changes in the city water supply. The turbidity can include organic matter, minerals, and other fine particles that make your water look unsafe.
Ashley's Solution: WaterTech BlueMAX sediment pre-filter — Ashley installs this as a first line of defense, removing sediment, dirt, and sand before water reaches your softener or filter. WaterTech RO PurePro QC (RO-PPQC) for polished drinking water at your kitchen tap.
6. IRON AND STAINING
The Problem: Iron dissolved in water is responsible for the rusty-orange or brown staining that appears on sinks, toilets, tubs, and laundry. Even clear water can carry dissolved iron that oxidizes on contact with air and surfaces. Manganese causes similar dark (black or gray) staining. These stains are extremely difficult to remove once set.
Ashley's Solution: WaterTech SoftMAX Pro reduces iron and manganese throughout your home. WaterTech Reionator Pro and Reionator Pro Ultra also address iron as part of their comprehensive conditioning process. Ashley recommends a water test first to determine iron levels and the right solution.
7. BACTERIA, VIRUSES, AND CYSTS
The Problem: While municipal water is regulated and treated, system failures do occur and not every distribution system operates at full government standards. Cysts like Giardia and Cryptosporidium are resistant to chlorine disinfection at standard levels and can cause serious gastrointestinal illness. Bacteria and viruses represent a similar concern following infrastructure failures.
Ashley's Solution: WaterTech Infinity Protector — IAPMO R&T Certified for cyst reduction (Giardia and Cryptosporidium) at NSF/ANSI Standard 53. Ashley also installs UV disinfection systems for additional protection where indicated by water testing.
8. NITRATES
The Problem: Nitrates are colorless, odorless minerals that occur naturally or from agricultural activity. In Idaho's agricultural Treasure Valley, nitrate levels in some areas can approach or exceed EPA action levels. Nitrates are particularly dangerous for infants under 6 months — high levels can interfere with oxygen transport in the blood.
Ashley's Solution: WaterTech RO PurePro QC reverse osmosis system — RO membranes are highly effective at removing nitrates from drinking water. Ashley recommends an RO system as the primary nitrate solution for drinking and cooking water in affected areas.
WaterTech's Know Your Water resource (watertech.com/know-your-water) identifies eight primary water quality issues in city water supplies. Here's how each one presents in your Boise or Nampa home — and how Ashley Heating Air and Water addresses it:

SIGNS YOU HAVE A WATER QUALITY PROBLEM IN YOUR HOME
Pure Water at the Kitchen Tap
Signs of Hard Water
-
White, chalky deposits on faucets, shower heads, and fixtures

THE FIRST STEP - FREE WATER TEST
Every water treatment recommendation Ashley Heating Air and Water makes starts with a free water test. Ashley assesses your water's hardness, pH, chlorine levels, and visible issues before recommending any system. We will never recommend a system more complex or expensive than your water actually needs — and a water test is the only honest way to know what your water actually contains.
