What's in the Air? Understanding VOCs, Allergens, and Pollutants in Idaho Homes

Most indoor air pollutants are invisible. You can't see the volatile organic compounds off-gassing from your new flooring, the mold spores circulating from a damp basement, or the fine particulates from wildfire smoke that have infiltrated your home. Yet these contaminants have real, measurable health effects — particularly for children, elderly family members, and anyone with respiratory conditions. Understanding what's actually in your home's air is the first step toward protecting your family.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

VOCs are carbon-based chemicals that evaporate easily at room temperature, releasing molecules into your home's air. Sources are widespread in the typical Idaho home:

Building materials and finishes: Paints, varnishes, adhesives, new flooring (particularly vinyl and laminate), particleboard furniture, and carpeting all off-gas VOCs — most intensively when new, but continuing for months or years.

Cleaning and personal care products: Many conventional cleaning products, air fresheners, dry-cleaned fabrics, and personal care products contain VOCs that are released during and after use.

Combustion sources: Gas stoves, fireplaces, attached garages, and candles release combustion byproducts including formaldehyde, benzene, and other VOCs.

Health effects: Short-term VOC exposure causes eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Long-term exposure to specific VOCs including benzene and formaldehyde is associated with more serious health outcomes. Children are particularly susceptible due to their smaller body size and developing systems.

Solutions: The Aerus Air Scrubber's ActivePure technology actively breaks down VOC molecules through photocatalytic oxidation — unlike filters, which cannot capture gases.

Biological Allergens

The Treasure Valley's outdoor allergen environment is significant — high pollen counts from agriculture, irrigation season increases in mold spore counts, and an active pest environment all contribute to indoor allergen loads:

Pollen: Tree, grass, and weed pollen infiltrates homes through normal air exchange and on clothing, pets, and people. Spring and fall peak seasons can be severe in agricultural areas.

Dust mites: Present in virtually every home, dust mites thrive in bedding, upholstered furniture, and carpet. Their waste products are among the most common indoor allergens, associated with chronic asthma and rhinitis.

Mold spores: Idaho's irrigation season elevates outdoor mold spore counts significantly. Indoor moisture issues — particularly in basements, bathrooms, and around HVAC equipment — create indoor mold sources.

Pet dander: Proteins in pet skin flakes, saliva, and urine are potent allergens. Even "hypoallergenic" breeds produce some dander. In homes with multiple pets, dander accumulation can be significant.

Solutions: High-efficiency filtration (MERV 13+, Electronic Air Cleaners) is the primary tool for biological allergen reduction. Combined with the Active Gold Air Purifier's UV germicidal capability for mold spore destruction, allergen loads can be significantly reduced.

Fine Particulates and Smoke

PM2.5 (fine particulate matter 2.5 microns and smaller) is particularly concerning because it penetrates deepest into the lungs and has the most significant documented health effects. Sources in the Treasure Valley include wildfire smoke (increasingly severe in summer and fall), agricultural dust from surrounding farmland, traffic and industrial emissions, and combustion from gas appliances and wood-burning fireplaces.

Standard 1-inch furnace filters are largely ineffective against PM2.5. Electronic Air Cleaners with their electrostatic capture mechanism, combined with Aerus Air Scrubber technology for the chemical components of smoke, provide meaningful protection during smoke events.

Taking Action

Understanding your home's specific air quality challenges is the starting point for effective treatment. Ashley Heating Air and Water can discuss your family's specific concerns — respiratory conditions, allergy profiles, smoke sensitivity, and home characteristics — and recommend the right combination of solutions:

For VOCs: Aerus Air Scrubber with ActivePure technologyFor biological allergens and fine particles: Electronic Air Cleaner, Active Gold Air PurifierFor comprehensive protection: Combined system approachFor ductwork contamination: Professional duct cleaning
